Language immersion is a great start.
What's next?

Immersion is widely regarded as the best way to learn a foreign language. But, languages aren't learned through osmosis! Once you're living abroad, what's next?

Beyond Immersion: Language Learning Strategies for Study Abroad Students is a one-hour asynchronous course, applicable to learners of all languages, that teaches specific strategies study abroad students can use to achieve their language learning goals.

If you're currently studying abroad or about to study abroad, then you've found this resource at exactly the right time.

The Course

This quick, 60-minute course will change how you think about language learning during study abroad, challenge you to define your specific language goals, and give you specific language learning strategies so that you can meet those goals.

Basics of language learning

In part one, you'll learn to recognize three common myths about language learning during study abroad. Is your goal to go abroad and "become fluent" in your host country's language? This part is for you. You'll also learn the three key elements needed for successful language learning.

Language learning strategies

Part two introduces you to direct and indirect language learning strategies. You'll learn six strategies that will make your learning more effective while you're studying abroad. Some strategies will help you study more efficiently while others will help you when you're interacting in public using your language.

Build your language learning plan

In part three, you'll dive into affective and metacognitive  factors that impact language learning. The strategies you'll learn in this section will enable you to set language goals, evaluate your progress, and keep anxiety from getting in the way. Finally, you'll build a plan to reach your study abroad language learning goal.

About Me

Madeleine Achgill, creator of Beyond Immersion

Hey there! I'm a six-time study abroad enthusiast with experiences in Ecuador, China, and Argentina through Rotary Youth Exchange, NSLI-Y, Fulbright, Boren, the Language Flagship, and the University of Mississippi.

During my journeys, I noticed a critical gap in independent language learning support for students abroad. Many fail to take full advantage of language learning opportunities due to insufficient guidance. To bridge this gap, I created Beyond Immersion, a project born out of my M. Ed. in Learning Design and Technology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. This initiative addresses the unmet needs of study abroad students, providing them with quick and easy access to vital language learning skills.
